Note for Mac Users: Mac versions of Outlook do not connect to the Exchange server in the same way as PC versions.Every time a Mac checks for new mail, it also updates the GAL.As a faculty/staff member, your Outlook program automatically syncs with the Exchange server on a regular basis. For example, say a new person joins your workgroup. You are unable to see his information in your address book. This article shows how to manually update the Global Address List (GAL) in Outlook (version 2010 and above). The Global Address List is a directory of contact information that is stored in a central place called the Exchange Server.
This cmdlet is available only in on-premises Exchange Server 2016.
To see what permissions you need, see the "Address lists" entry in the Email address and address book permissions topic.
By default in Exchange Online, the Address List role isn’t assigned to any role groups.
Please visit the document on How to turn on or off Cached Exchange Mode for (Outlook 2010, and Outlook 20).
Outlook 2011 does not use Exchange Cached mode and directly connects to the Global Address Book (GAL) via LDAP connection.
In Cached Exchange Mode, Outlook 2007 & 2010 downloads a local copy of the Global Address List (GAL), but only updates it every 24 hours.
